LEE-VANDERHOOF-MCKEE-LANGE FLAT ROCK 60TH ANNIVERSARY WINNERS

LEE-VANDERHOOF-MCKEE-LANGE FLAT ROCK 60TH ANNIVERSARY WINNERS

(FLAT ROCK, MI - July 13, 2013) - After 3 weeks of rain, sunshine and racing returned to Flat Rock Speedway for the track’s official 60th Anniversary celebration.  Eric Lee, Jeremy Vanderhoof, Clyde McKee and Craig Lange were victorious and visited the Sun Drop Winner’s Circle.  A good crowd turned out to witness the historic and what turned out to be a long, long night of racing, capped off with the annual Fireworks display.

A great battle for the lead for much of the event kept things exciting in the 60 lap ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Model feature.  The 23 car field took the green and Dennis Strickland nosed into the lead.  Eric Lee worked his way up from his starting spot and pressured Strickland as the laps clicked off.  Paul Pelletier was the man on the move as he steadily moved up from 12th spot to slide into contention for the win.  That trio put on a great show in the final 15 laps, as they worked their way through race traffic.  Lee, using the high groove, grabbed the top spot with 11 laps to go and grabbed the victory.  Pelletier dove to the inside of Strickland in the final 5 circuits to cap off his great run to second, Strickland was third, Steve Cronenwett Jr. recovered and charged back up to fourth spot.
Steve had been in fourth for the first half of the race, but got bounced back several spots in heavy traffic, only to zip back up to fourth at the stripe.  Fifth was Ron Allen, followed by Derek Wiley, Justin Schroeder, Frank Jiovani, Scott Pemberton and Jeff Plumb.  A lap 50 red flag saw Jeff Vrsek and Brad Turner eliminated from competition.  Both drivers were ok.  Jiovani, Dan Trosen Jr. and Derrick Sheppard were heat race winners.  Lee set fast time at 11:731.

HANTZ GRABS 7-UP 125 AT FLAT ROCK

HANTZ GRABS 7-UP 125 AT FLAT ROCK

(FLAT ROCK, MI - August 17, 2013) - Angola, IN veteran Scott Hantz led only 3 laps, but they were the last 3 as he took the victory in the 7-Up 125 lap feature for the ARCA/CRA Super Series Late Models powered by Jeg’s Saturday night at Flat Rock Speedway.  The race saw an incredible run of 121 laps of straight green flag racing after a lap 1 yellow flag.  NASCAR driver David Stremme signed autographs and greeted fans at the track.

A 20 car field took the green flag and female star Ali Kern grabbed the lead.  Ali was impressive out front, working traffic to the high and low side and staying in the number 1 spot for the initial 40 laps.  The yellow came out after 1 circuit when Kenny Tweedy spun in turn 2.  The next 121 laps would run green, and with traffic and battles for position, the action was exciting all around the ¼ mile paved oval.

Brian Campbell began to make his run to the front and eventually caught Kern and zipped into the lead on lap 41, using the high groove.  Campbell stayed up top as he set a very quick pace.  Hantz got caught in race traffic, which slowed his progress in the early stages of the race. Fast qualifier and current ARCA/CRA point leader Travis Braden (12:183), steadily move up through the field from his 8th starting spot.  The long stretch of green flag racing saw 4-time Flat Rock champ Eric Lee, Braden and Hantz stage a great battle for position, while Campbell motored out front.

25 DAYS TO THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GLASS CITY 200!

25 DAYS TO THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GLASS CITY 200!

In 1968, Toledo Speedway promoter and ARCA founder John Marcum came up with the idea of running a 200 lap Late Model invitational—the Glass City 200.  Despite a 20-year hiatus of the race from 1978-1998 (when the Toledo track was sold), the race was revived in 1999 when Marcum’s grandson, Ron Drager, purchased the track with business partner Roy Mott.

And today, the race still carries the prestige and notoriety that it once did back in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

McCOLL CAPTURES FLAT ROCK ENDURO; KATAFIASZ 4 CYL. CHAMP

McCOLL CAPTURES FLAT ROCK ENDURO; KATAFIASZ 4 CYL. CHAMP

(Flat Rock, Michigan - September 7, 2013) -   A great battle for the win in Saturday night’s Flat Rock Speedway 250 lap Enduro race went to the wire, with Rick McColl edging Rayce Metdpenningen for the victory and the $1000 first place prize.  David Katafiasz took the ARCA 4 Cylinder championship, with the feature win going to Arnold Kirsch.  Eric Hoffman notched the MCR Dwarf Car win and the duo of Howard Kelley Jr./Tom O’Leary III grabbed the Figure 8 train race.  A steady rain backed up the start of the race card by nearly 1 hour.

For the first time in the history of the Enduro Series, the drivers took practice laps and qualified.  Rick McColl set fast time and rolled an 8 for the inversion.  Early leader Jeff Metdepenningen gave way to McColl in the early stages, while Rayce Metdepenningen, Jeff’s son, took up the battle for the lead with McColl.  The duo would swap the lead back and forth several times after the half-way point, setting up the finish.  Rick was able to stay out front to take the win, with Rayce second, Bobby Hugo third, Jeff Metdepenningen fourth and Troy Brehmer fifth, followed by Dave Bennett, Derrick Sheppard, Danny Bennett, Jeff Braun and Arnold Kirsch.

30 cars started the contest.  A lap 56 red flag stopped action when Glenn Cunningham apparently had the throttle stick in his car, sending him head-on into the turn 1 wall.

Toledo resident David Katafiasz had a tough night, but had enough of a cushion to still win his first-ever ARCA 4 Cylinder title, which combined the points for the class between both Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways.  In the 20 lap championship race, Arnold Kirsch nosed by David Price with 5 laps to go to take the win.  Price was second, Brad Turner third, Joe Appel fourth and Eric Fitzpatrick fifth, followed by Katafiasz and Mike Berschback.  Katafiasz had a right front wheel lock up on his machine early in the event.
