VANDOORN, JR ROAHRIG CAPTURE GLASS CITY WINS
Toledo, Ohio—September 16, 2017: Johnny VanDoorn and JR Roahrig took the wins in their respective 100 lap feature races at the 29th running of the Central Transport Glass City 200 presented by the Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn and Courtyard by Marriott at Toledo Speedway Saturday night. The 200 closed the season at the Glass City oval. 35 outlaw Late Models and 22 ARCA/CRA Late Models were on hand for the new format for the 200.
The ARCA/CRA Super Series powered by Jegs Stock-bodied Late Model 100 lap event saw just 1 yellow flag the entire distance. Kyle Crump led the first 9 laps when the only yellow came out. Crump darted down pit road, giving the lead to Brian Campbell. Brain took off on the restart and set a quick pace, but his night ended on lap 28. VanDoorn, who had tracked down Brian, now had the top spot and stayed there to the checkered flag, collecting the $5000 top prize. Harold Fair Jr. tried to reel in Johnny but settled for second. Tyler Ankrum, Brett Robinson and Hunter Jack completed the top five finishers
A rash of yellow and red flags slowed the action in the outlaw Late Model 100 lap contest, but the race for the lead stayed exciting throughout the event. JR Roahrig out-dueled his son, Tyler, and in the final laps, Terry Senneker, to score the victory. Early leader Steve Needles traded the lead early on with JR, as the duo ran door to door for several laps. Needles grabbed the lead back on a lap 34 restart, but had engine trouble on lap 35, scattering the field as the track got coated with oil. Brandon Lyons got caught up in the mess and tagged the foam blocks in turn 3, ending his run. JR had the lead, while son Tyler Roahrig now moved into contention. At the half-way mark, Tyler zipped by his father to take the point and stayed there until JR zipped by on the outside lane on a lap 76 restart. The red came out on that lap when Harold Fair Jr. cut a tire down and slammed the turn 2 blocks. His night was over and his car sustained heavy damage. Senneker got by Tyler on the ensuing green flag, but Tyler fought back and grabbed second spot, setting his sights on his father. He got within a car length of JR just as the yellow came out for a piece of metal in the groove in turn 2 on lap 89.
Senneker made the pass stick on this re-start as he grabbed second spot, but JR was gone as he pulled away for the $5000 win. Senneker, Tyler Roahrig, Frankie Jiovani and Andy Bozell were next in line for the top 5 finishers. Brian Bergakker, Billy Roberts, Justin Claucherty, Scott Pemberton and TK Whitman rounded out the top 10. A lap 1 wreck eliminated Dennis Strickland, Jimmy Thiel and Jimmie Ward Jr.
The Sweet Manufacturing Outlaw Late Model Series champion is Tyler Roahrig, who clinched the title at Toledo. The Series, in its first season, was made up of 6 races in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
Additional sponsors for the Central Transport Glass City 200 include R & M Recycling, Bazell Race Fuels, Sunoco Race Fuels, First Care Ambulance, DTS Drive Train Specialists and Cassens Transport.
Jack Varney Jr. took the 15 lap last-chance races, which moved the top 4 into the 100 lap event. 15 year old rookie Albert Francis, Ward Jr. and Tom Cronenwett advanced the feature.
2009 Glass City winner Dave Kuhlman was introduced as the Grand Marshal of the event. Dave was presented an ARCA lifetime membership Gold Card from ARCA President and Toledo promoter Ron Drager in pre-race festivities.
DTS Drive Train Specialists has posted five-$50 product/service certificates in a random draw for the event for the outlaw Late Model portion, while Penske Shocks will award a $250 product certificate to the JR Roahrig.
Senneker led the time trials at 14:894 for the outlaw-bodied Late Models and took the $500 Passtime Fast Qualifier bonus, while VanDoorn was the fastest of the ARCA/CRA cars at 15:430 and pocketed the $500 PlayZone of Toledo fast time bonus.
