TOLEDO SPEEDWAY THROWBACK THURSDAY

TOLEDO SPEEDWAY THROWBACK THURSDAY

The “Clown Prince” of racing in the Figure 8 wars of the 1960’s and early 1970’s is pictured here in his famous Pontiac Tempest---Lubie Allen of Taylor, MI.  Always a threat to win, Lubie was a tough racer who was also a great entertainer!  His 20 wins at Toledo and 9 at Flat Rock during his career is quite impressive, based on the quality of competition he faced-Dick “Little Richard” Simmons, Denny Pace, Chuck Hall and many more.  His gang of racers and crew were known as “Lubie’s Raiders”.  The photo of his #60 is from a 1973 victory.  Lubie graced the cover of one of the Sunday Toledo magazines of the Toledo Blade back in the day, accompanied by a story written by now-retired sports columnist Dave Woolford.
