USAC Sprints And Midgets Return To Toledo July 1

USAC Sprints And Midgets Return To Toledo July 1

(TOLEDO, Ohio - June 22, 2011) - 1996 Indy 500 winning car owner Ron Hemelgarn and the local Super Fitness locations will sponsor the annual USAC Sprint and Midget double-header at Toledo Speedway Friday, July 1.  The two USAC divisions have a long and storied history of competition at the Glass City oval, dating back to the late 1960’s.

Race fans can save $5 on adult admission tickets by purchasing their tickets in advance by calling the track at 419-727-1100.  Major credit cards are accepted for phone orders.  The track office will have tickets for sale for walk-in customers on a daily basis.  The advance discount sale ends at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 30.

The USAC open-wheel divisions have long-served as a stepping stone for drivers headed to the Indy Car ranks, and most recently, the NASCAR Stock car classes.  Drivers such as AJ Foyt, Al Unser, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and many more have made their marks in the USAC ranks before moving on.  Current NASCAR stars Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne have both competed at Toledo with USAC before their switch to stock cars.

Current USAC AMSOIL pavement Sprint Car points leader Kody Swanson will be on hand, along with over-all sprint point leader Levi Jones.  Mopar Midget top point man Bryan Clauson and Milwaukee winner Darren Hagan lead the field of Midget entries for the July 1 Toledo event.

Swanson set a new track record in 2010 for the Sprint Cars at 14:668, while Henry Clarke of Villa Park, CA won the feature.  Tracy Hines was the fast qualifier for the USAC Midgets last year, with Hagan, a resident of Riverside, CA, winning the Midget feature event.  Brad Sweet holds the Midget track record at 14:983, set in July of 2009.

A host of vintage race cars will be on display in the spectator concourse during race day.  The track will also pay homage to past USAC racers at the annual reunion at Toledo.

The front gates will open at 4 p.m., practice also begins at 4, time trials are set for 6 and racing begins at 7:30 p.m.
