Rain Forces Glass City 200 to Sunday Afternoon

TOLEDO, OH  (10-2-10) --  A valiant try by Toledo Speedway track staff could not beat Mother Nature Saturday night, as rain stopped the Great Lakes Helicopters Glass City 200 presented by Cherry Picked Auto Parts after just 10 laps were completed.  The race will be resumed at lap 10 when the green flag flies at 1 p.m. Sunday. The front gates open at 11 a.m. Sunday and the 200 will be resumed at 1 p.m.  ALL rain checks must be exchanged at the ticket windows upon arrival to the track.

Early day rains shuffled the practice schedule, but things got back on track for qualifying at 3 p.m.  An incredible display of speed during the PASSTIME Qualifying session saw Scott Hantz rip off a lap of 14:815, just missing the track record.  A total of 6 drivers dipped down into the 14 second bracket for the 35 car field.  Hantz earned a $500 bonus courtesy of PASSTIME.

The DTS Drive Train Specialists 25 lap B Main saw Justin May edge Brett Jursik for the win.  Scott Pemberton, Craig Everage, George Rangel and Brad Birr and also moved into the 200 as the top 6 in the event filled out the 30 car field for the big race.

The race began with the command to start the engines from youngsters Brandon Lojko and Collin Parkin, representing Great Lakes Helicopters.  On the start, a pileup in turn 1 involving 8 cars took place, involving Dakota Carlson, Steve Sauve, Brett Jursik, Jay Sommers, Claude Plante Jr., Scott Baker, George Rangel and Joe Hawes.  Carlson, Plante, Baker, Rangel and Hawes were eliminated in the incident.  On the next try, Jake Francis zipped into the lead, with North Carolina driver Brad Rogers glued to his bumper.  Rogers looked to the low groove just as the yellow came out, followed by the red flag when the rains came.  Francis will be the leader when the race resumes Sunday afternoon.

The CRA Sportsman division served as the companion race for the 200 this season and their portion of the show was completed.  Derrick Griffin, pulling double duty, scored the win as he sailed away from the competition in the R & M Recycling 50 lap feature race.  Charlie Hanna took command at the start and led the first 10 laps.  The race was stopped on lap 7 when a 6 car incident in turn 1 brought out the red flag.  Fast qualifier Cale Asztalos (16:895) could not avoid the wreck and was knocked out of the race.  Hanna took off on the restart, but Tony Dager was on the move on the outside lane.  Dager picked off 3 cars to get to second spot, with Griffin, moving from 12th, in his tracks.  Dager shot into the lead on lap 11 but by lap 13 Griffin had motored into the lead and built up a sizable margin on his way to victory.  Keith Sterkowitz was second, Hanna third, Ron Allen fourth and Al Cook Jr. fifth, followed by Jason Atkinson, Dager, Brandon Hermiller, Kyle DeLisle and Rick Sullivan.  22 cars started the contest.
