Toledo "Short Track Wars" A Battle
(TOLEDO, Ohio - September 25, 2010) - Toledo Speedway's "Short Track Wars" event took place Saturday, highlighted by the first-ever road course type event, utilizing parts of the ½ mile, ¼ mile and pit road. Billy Earley was the winner in the entertaining 15 lap event, with Cory McCaughey, Tyler Rycenga and Rob Roney also claiming feature wins.
Street Stocks, Factory Stocks, Enduro cars, 4 Cylinders and Figure 8 cars made up the field for the Road Course race. The layout featured a right turn chicane in the middle of the ¼ mile, taking the cars down pit road, up onto the ½ mile in turns 3 and 4 and to the frontstraight. Figure 8 driver Billy Earley started on the pole via the blind draw and sped to the victory. 2 and 3 wide racing and some exciting moves and spins at the chicane made for a fun event for drivers and fans alike. Earley almost gave up his lead when he slid by the right turn and up the ¼ mile track, but he recovered and held on to win the race over Cory McCaughey, Troy Brehmer, Lonnie York, James Rae, Dan Harper, Tom O'Leary IV, Allen Bland Sr., Perry Marlow and Shonda Harbin. McCaughey and O'Leary IV staged a great battle for second for much of the contest, swapping spots and lanes every lap. O'Leary dropped back when a tire went down. Scott Matthews, Mike Marlow, Steven Searles, Jesse Carillo and Allen Bland Jr. completed the finishing order.
With a big Sprint Car wing on his roof, McCaughey cruised to the win in the 30 lap Stock Car oval race of the day. Allen Bland Sr. was second, Rae third, Brehmer fourth and York fifth, followed by Carillo, Earley, Mike Marlow, Harper and Harbin. Perry Marlow, James McClure, Emily McCaughey, Searles, AJ Padgett, David Katafiaz, Tom O'Leary IV and Bland Jr. were next in line. Rae, Bland Sr. and Cory McCaughey captured the heat races.
A five-car pack battled up front in the 20 car, 30 lap Michigan Legends feature, with Tyler Rycenga nosing in front in the closing laps to take the win. Tony Monge and John Turnbull Jr. took turns leading the race as Rycenga got under Turnbull going into turn 1 to take the lead on his way to victory. Turnbull Jr. was second, Monge third, a fast-closing Bryan Nuckles was fourth and Rick Kilbourn was fifth, followed by Ben Rouster, Adam Cuthbertson, Chris Bither, Sean McPherson and Matt O'Leary. Early front-runner Levi Rouster dropped out of the event but secured enough points to claim the 2010 Michigan Legends title. Rycenga, Turnbull and Monge were the heat race winners.
A very fast Rob Roney zipped to the win in the 25 lap MCR Dwarf Car feature race. A late-race caution erased Rob's lead, but Roney pulled away on the ensuing green flag and took his car to the Sunny D Winner's Circle at Toledo. Craig Curtis came on strong to take second, Stephen Bobek was third, Troy Hoffman fourth and Dane Ayers fifth. Eric Hoffman, Mike McManman Sr., Kevin Ayers, Todd Getz and Rick Ayers completed the top ten in the 18 car field. Jeff Slayton posted quick time at 11:443. Roney, Bobek and Jim Miller were the heat race winners.
