Shirey Captures Buckeye Sprint Toledo Win

Shirey Captures Buckeye Sprint Toledo Win
TOLEDO, OH  (8-6-10)--  Kevin Shirey zipped to the win in the 30 lap Buckeye 305 Winged Sprint Car feature at Toledo Speedway Friday evening.  A good-sized crowd was on hand to also see Jim Froling, Corey McCaughey and Greg Studt visit the Sunny D Winner's Circle on a beautiful summer night. A hard crash in the second Sprint heat saw Brian Buchanan back into the concrete wall while leading his event.  The car appeared to drop down, a puff of smoke came out and the car did a quick spin, sending Brian into the wall at the start of the front-straight.  The engine backfired and a fire ensued.  Quick work by the track's safety crew and staff kept the fire down.  Brian emerged from the car with assistance from emergency personnel and was taken to the hospital for treatment and further observation.  He was alert and talking to staff while being taken to the ambulance.

The 305 Sprinters made a trip to Toledo after being washed out of the original May 21 show.  Michigan driver Ryan Gillenwater started things on the right foot by setting a new track record in qualifying for the 305's by cutting a great lap of 13:718.  Shirey and Frank Neill captured the heat races.  The second heat was shifted back and the ¼ mile heats were run while the track clean-up was completed from the crash.

Kevin Shirey made it clear he was the man to beat as he jumped from the outside pole and led every lap of the 30 lap contest.  Talon Stephens stayed within striking distance for much of the race, but in the final 8 laps, Kevin pulled away for the victory.  Stephens held back a late charge by Gillenwater to take third, Joey Wyckoff was fourth and Cody Gallogly fifth, followed by Neill, Mike Moore, Mike Sheppard, Jim Schwab and Mike Burkin.frolingvltol080610.jpg

Third-generation driver Tom O'Leary IV led the first 10 laps until Jim Froling zipped by on the outside on his way to the win in the 35 lap ARCA Sportsman feature, which went all-green flag.  After Froling took the lead, Jim's car started to gradually slow, erasing a good lead over the young  O'Leary.  At lap 25, the lead was just a few car lengths as O'Leary closed in on the sputtering car of Froling.  With 3 to go, Tom was on the back bumper and the order stayed that way as O'Leary took a look to the outside coming to the checkered flag, coming up a car length short as Froling hung on for the victory.  Third was Dave Arnold Jr., coming back from a hard crash just a week ago.  Howard Kelley Jr., Ron Allen, Kyle DeLisle, Kenny McKay Jr., Tom Adams Jr., Greg Stilwell and Scott Lockenour completed the top ten.  DeLisle and Stilwell were the heat race winners, while Allen posted fast time at 17:370.mccaughyvltol080610.jpg

A rough and tumble 20 lap ARCA Factory Stock feature saw a great battle up front and an exciting finish to close out the night.  Craig Osenbaugh appeared to be headed to his first-ever win, but Cory McCaughey, using the outside groove, slid by Craig on the final lap to win the event.  Randy Padgett led the first 2 circuits until Osenbaugh assumed command.  A tight pack including the leader, Todd Perkins and eventually McCaughey and Landon Schuster made things interesting in the final 8 laps.  Cory went up top, found the lane and charged to a big win over Schuster, Osenbaugh, Perkins and Mike Hammer.  Ramon Ortiz, Padgett, Dusty Brunt, John Rabideau and Eric Huston were next in line.  Hammer, Padgett and rookie Emily McCaughey (Cory's sister) took heat wins.  Schuster set fast time at 11:886.

A 12 car field on Toledo's short and tight Figure 8 track is usually a great show, with lots of intersection action!  studtvltol080610.jpgWith an off-night at Flat Rock Speedway the following night, 17 ARCA Figure 8 machines showed up Friday, and a wild, action-packed event saw Greg Studt emerge with a win in his first trip to Toledo this season.  A former champ at the track, Greg took the lead on lap 4 when leader Anthony Terris and Tom O'Leary Jr. crashed at the intersection, bringing out the red flag.  Both drivers were ok and Terris continued after changing a tire.  Jeremy Vanderhoof led the first lap, Terris laps 2 and 3 and then Studt took control and stayed there for the remainder of the event, dodging spinning cars and plenty of cross-over traffic!  Dennis Whisman took second, while third went to Indiana visitor Ben Tunny, at the wheel of Rob Martel's #44.  Ben is former champ of the World Figure 8 race and was impressive in his first outing at the track.  Vanderhoof took fourth and Robbie Loving fifth, with Terris, James Rae, Sam Hall, Archie Padgett and Chuck Pankow rounding out the top ten finishers.  Whisman and Loving captured the heat races.
