TOLEDO, OH (7-30-10)-- A large crowd gathered for Kid's Night at Toledo Speedway on a beautiful Friday evening. Each child up to age 14 was admitted free and received a free hot dog, chips and a drink, courtesy of Sherwood Foods, Bar S Hot Dogs, Seyfert's Snacks and the Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group. Ron Allen, Jeremy Vanderhoof and Eric Huston notched feature wins and visited the Sunny D Winner's Circle in post-race festivities.
The ARCA Sportsman division competed in their biggest race of the season. The 50 lap contest saw 21 cars on the grounds, with the main event filled with yellow and red flags for numerous incidents. On the green flag, Chad Stilwell took the lead until Howard Kelley Jr. motored by for the top spot. With an inversion of 8 cars, fast qualifier Ron Allen (17:544) began his move to the front early on. The first yellow came out on lap 7 when Scott Lockenour tapped Randy Cornett in turn 3, collecting Tommy Adams and Greg Stilwell in the process. Adams was done for the night, while the other 3 were able to rejoin the event. The rash of yellows began and a red flag came out on lap 16 when Rich Abel had an engine let go in turn 1 in front of the leaders. Kelley slid to the wall and tagged it, ending his night. Dave Arnold Jr., Allen and Froling all spun and somehow missed the major portion of the wreck, but Arnold did receive damage to the tail of his car, but still continued with the lead. On the restart, Allen went low and Froling high as they sandwiched Arnold while battling for the lead. Allen came out with the point, Froling second and Arnold dropped back to third. On lap 22, the red came out again when Arnold had his car swap ends and slammed the turn 2 wall. Andy Harding slid into Arnold, ending young Arnold's night while his car sustained major damage. After a few more yellows and another red, the race was halted and the cars parked on the back straight while the Figure 8 division ran their event. When the race did resume, Allen had company as Froling and Tom O'Leary IV made it a 3-car battle. Froling looked high and low, O'Leary sat back and waited for something to happen, while Mike Young joined the battle for the final 5 circuits.
On the final lap coming to the stripe, a 3-wide finish saw Allen hang on over Froling, with O'Leary on the high side behind by just a fender. Young was fourth and Kenny McKay fifth, followed by Kyle DeLisle, Lockenour, Greg Stilwell, Randy Cornett and Brian Pelkey. Kelley Jr., Adams and Dave Frantz took the heat wins.
Current Flat Rock point leader Jeremy Vanderhoof made his first visit to Toledo this year and took the victory in a wild and exciting 20 lap ARCA Figure 8 feature. Numerous intersection action with near misses kept things thrilling for the throng of fans as they cheered throughout the event. Allen Bland Sr. led the first 2 laps until Vanderhoof zipped by and outdistanced Dennis Whisman for the victory. Anthony Terris grabbed third, Bland Sr. was fourth and Randy Roberts fifth, with Sam Hall, Chuck Pankow, James Rae, Stephanie Bradley and Archie Padgett completing the top ten finishers. Terris and Whisman took the heat wins.
Former champ Eric Huston put it all together to win his first feature of the season in the 20 lap ARCA Factory Stock main event. Huston had pressure from Landon Schuster in the late stages, with Todd Perkins also in the mix. With 2 to go, Huston opened the door on the bottom in turn 1 and Schuster darted low, but Eric powered his way back by for the top spot and grabbed the victory over Schuster, Perkins, Rick Cousino Sr., Ramon Ortiz, Craig Osenbaugh, Randy Padgett, Dusty Brunt, Cory McCaughey and Brian Moore. Perkins, Padgett and Osenbaugh took the heat wins. Huston set quick time at 11:875.
