Butch Giles Memorial 100 Set for July 31 at Flat Rock; Allegiant Air Late Model Gold Cup Showdown
(FLAT ROCK, Mich. - July 20, 2010) - The fifth and final leg of the ARCA Allegiant Air Late Model Gold Cup Series is set for Saturday, July 31 at Flat Rock Speedway. The Butch Giles Memorial 100 will decide the 2010 Gold Cup champion from the series of five events between Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways.
The event has been named in honor of Butch Giles, a long-time sponsor and car owner at both tracks. Giles, the owner of Giles Auto Body in Inkster, Mich., passed away just prior to the start of the 2010 season. His son, Henry, now operates the body shop and is the owner of the No. 88 Late Model driven by Ron Allen.
"The race was originally titled the Giles Auto Body 100, but after speaking with Henry and his brother, Jeff, the decision was made to change the name of the event," said Scott Schultz, General Manager of the track. "Butch was just a great person, and was a big supporter of both tracks. We are proud to host the Butch Giles Memorial 100 at Flat Rock in his honor."
The 100-lap race pays $2000 to win and $425 to start. A total of 24 cars will take the green flag at "The Rock" July 31. The track's Figure 8s and DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks will also be in action.
Indiana native Scott Hantz holds a 15-point lead over Grand Rapids, Mich. driver Mike Root heading into the final series event of the season. Hantz has won two of the events at Toledo, with Harold Fair Jr. taking the other Toledo race. Root captured the Moran Chevrolet/Stan Yee Memorial 150 at Flat Rock in June and is the defending champion of the Allegiant Air Gold Cup Series. Both Hantz and Root have been very successful throughout the Michigan-Ohio-Indiana area this summer.
The top 3 in the final Gold Cup points will each receive two (2) round trip tickets from Toledo to Florida, courtesy of Allegiant Air. The Series also receives three (3) provisional starting positions for the 22nd running of the Glass City 200 presented by Cherry Picked Auto Parts, set for Saturday, October 2 at Toledo Speedway.
Flat Rock's Saturday, July 31 schedule will see the pit area opening at 1:30 p.m., practice beginning at 3, time trials at 5, and racing at 7.
There is no advance ticket sale for the event. All tickets go on sale just prior to practice Saturday afternoon, July 31. Flat Rock Speedway is located on Telegraph Road, just 5 minutes from I-75 or I-275. The track phone number is 734-782-2480. Log onto http://www.flatrockspeedway.com for more information.
