Moore Bounces Back to Take Leppen Chiropractic 100 at Flat Rock
(FLAT ROCK, Mich. - July 17, 2010) - Tim Moore came back after crashing last week and scored the big win in the Leppen Chiropractic 100 for the ARCA DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks Saturday night at Flat Rock Speedway. James Rae captured the B Main and Greg Studt notched the Figure 8 win on Christmas in July Night, which featured Santa Claus and dozens of prizes that were given away to race fans. Dr. Cecilia Leppen and her children presented the trophies to the winners.
The biggest race of the season at Flat Rock for the DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks saw 42 cars in the pit area. Fast qualifier Dan Ford Jr. (13.384 seconds) pulled a 12 for the inversion for the 100-lap contest, putting David Kind and Dennis Whisman on the front row. Whisman darted out front on the start and built a sizable lead as pack racing gave him the chance to pull away from the 24-car starting field. Ford encountered problems for the second straight week, having to pit twice early in the contest with a fuel leak. His crew fixed the car and Ford rejoined the field several laps down. The first yellow appeared on Lap 25, which erased Whisman's lead and put Jarod MacZink within striking distance. On Lap 34, Whisman slowed and pitted when the engine quit, giving MacZink the top spot. MacZink sailed out front for 36 laps, but the trio of Rob Moore, Chad Guinn, and Jeff Kurzyniec were on the way to the front, only to be joined by Danny Slater. A Lap 61 yellow really tightened things up and gave Moore the shot he needed. Moore used the outside lane to get by several cars in a tight pack when everyone checked up, zipping him past Guinn and into second spot. On Lap 71, Moore darted under MacZink for the lead, with Guinn following suit several laps later to take second. Guinn put the pressure on Moore in the final five laps, but Moore held on for the win and the $1000 top prize. With the lap money bonus, Moore pocketed $1150 for his efforts. Guinn was second, MacZink third, Kurzyniec fourth, and Slater fifth. Tadek Stadniczuk, Steve Prucnell, Kind, Rich Frantz, and Moore completed the top ten. 16 of the 24 cars finished the event.
The 18-car, 30-lap Street Stock B Main saw the field whittled to just nine cars by Lap 18 due to attrition and accidents. Former B Main champ Rich Abel led the first 15 circuits, only to have another former B champ, James Rae, steal the lead on Lap 16 on the way to the victory. Rae got under Abel going into Turn 1, as the duo traded paint for about a lap until Rae was able to pull slightly away and grab the win. Billy Cronce made a late race charge to take second, and Troy Brehmer did the same and grabbed third. Fourth place went to Paul Falkenburg and fifth went to Abel, followed by Lonnie York, Anthony Camilli, Jimmy Little, John Huebner Sr., and Donald Burkhart. Burkhart led the B Cars with a lap of 13.995 seconds. Heat race winners were Jason Burkhart, Abel, and Little for the B cars, while A Main heat wins went to Slater, Terry Lilley, and Paul Duffin.
Despite a short field, the ARCA Figure 8 division entertained the crowd with several close calls at the intersection during the 20-lap contest. The race had completed just one lap when the red appeared as a spring came out of a car and on the track. Anthony Terris got crossed up and slammed into Gary Cronenwett, ending Cronenwett's night early. Robbie Loving tagged the wall on the first lap, sending him to the pits and also ending his night. Leader Sam Hall brought the field to the green on the restart, but his lead was short as Greg Studt slid by on Lap 3 to take charge and pull away for the victory. Jeremy Vanderhoof, Jerry Lee, Terris, Hall, James Rae, Chuck Pankow, Stephanie Bradley, Dennis Whisman, and Jeremy Fragassi completed the top 10 finishers. Whisman pulled out in the closing laps with a flat tire while running in the top five. Lee set fast time at 20.861 seconds, with the heat win also captured by Studt.
A big four-division race card is set for Saturday, July 24 at Flat Rock Speedway for All Sport Night. The ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Models return to action, and will be joined by the track's Figure 8 and DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks, and the Michigan Legends Cars.
