McCaughey Takes Toledo Factory Stock Special

TOLEDO, OH  (7-16-2010):  Santa Claus greeted race fans for the Lakeshore Utility Trailer/Velvet Ice Cream Christmas in July prize giveaway Friday night at Toledo Speedway.  Cory McCaughey was the winner of the ARCA Factory Stock special event, while Jim Froling, Dennis Whisman and Perry Marlow were also feature winners that visited the Sunny D Winner’s Circle.  Neal Ray and Donna Young from Velvet Ice Cream presented the trophies, while Santa Claus handed out dozens of prizes to the race fans.

A 35 lap feature awaited the ARCA Factory Stocks, and they proved worthy of the event.  The race went all green flag with great competition throughout the pack.  Don Cox took the lead at the green and led for 4 laps until Todd Perkins slid by for the lead.  Todd, a former flat track motorcycle racer, ran strong out front as the pack battled for position.  Current point leader Cory McCaughey reeled in Perkins at lap 25, with Landon Schuster in tow.  Perkins had handled lapped traffic in great fashion, but it gave Cory his opportunity.  He took the lead with 4 to go on the way to his win.  Schuster was able to grab second, Perkins was third, Ramon Ortiz took fourth and Danny Bennett was fifth, followed by Eric Huston (from 15th spot), Mike Hammer, Tim Shine, Cox and Randy Padgett. The 10 lap B Main went to Allen Bland Jr. as he topped Brad Turner, Rick Bennett, Mark Lavoie, Steve Winterhalter, Dave Stadniczuk and David Drake.  Bland did a burn out after his victory, only to have the axle shear off, much to the delight of the crowd.  Schuster set quick time at 11:949 for the 25 car field.  Heat race winners were Danny Bennett, Brian Graybill, Jesse Carillo and Bland Jr.  Huston won the last-chance event.

Former champion Jim Froling scored victory number 2 of the season by taking the win in the 35 lap ARCA Sportsman feature race.  The race was smooth for the first 21 laps, then a rash of yellows broke the pattern.  Andy Harding led laps 1 and 2, with Tommy Adams taking the point on lap 3.  Tommy held it until lap 13 when Froling sailed by to take control.  Jim stretched his lead, but, again the yellows erased his margins several times.  Adams spun on lap 24 while running second and the pack narrowly missed his car.  On a restart on that lap, Kyle DeLisle, Rich Abel, Todd Hamilton and Norm Lewallen got piled up coming out of turn 4.  Froling took off again when the race went back green and held his margin for the win over Howard Kelley Jr., Ron Allen, Dave Arnold Jr., Greg Stilwell, Art Rozane, Scott Lockenhour, Kenny McKay Jr., Hardning and Tom O’Leary IV.  Heat race winners were Kelley Jr., Chad Stilwell and Greg Stilwell.  Allen led the 19 car field in time trials with a lap of 17:570.

A wild and entertaining 20 lap ARCA Figure 8 feature saw Dennis Whisman grab the win after snaring the lead from Dan Apperson with just 2 laps to go.  Jimmy Rae led for 4 laps at the start until Apperson nosed into the lead,  Whisman had a lot of ground to make up, but mastered traffic to whittle the gap.  Finally on lap 18, Whisman slid by Dan at the intersection on his way to take the checkered flag.  Apperson was second, Anthony Terris was third, Rae fourth and Sam Hall fifth.  Joe Whisman, Allen Bland Sr., Chuck Pankow, Archie Padgett and Jeremy Fragassi completed the top ten.  Hall and Whisman took heat wins.

The father-son duo of Perry and Mike Marlow traded paint and the lead several times during the 20 lap ARCA 4 Cylinder race, with father Perry taking the victory.  Perry led the first lap until Mike grabbed the lead after making contact with his dad.  Mike cruised out front, but Perry came right back and stole the lead on lap 14 and held on for the win over Mike, Brad Turner, David Katafiaz and David Price.  Perry also won the heat, while Price set fast time 12:898.
