Maran Two-for-Two at Flat Rock

Maran Two-for-Two at Flat Rock

(TOLEDO, Ohio - July 3, 2010) - 2009 champ Jeff Maran made it two wins in two events by taking a very competitive 250-lap Enduro race Saturday evening at Flat Rock Speedway. Eric Hoffman took the MCR Dwarf Car feature, David Price won the 4-Cylinder event, Don Cox was the top dog in Race Car Bowling, and Bill Carberry sailed to the win in the Boat Figure 8.

Despite a short field of cars, the 250 Enduro race was action-packed and filled with battles for the lead for most of the contest. Four different drivers took turns leading the action. Marc Ortega led the first lap, with Rick Bennett, Jeff Metdpenningen, and Maran trading the lead in the early stages. Tristan Dupuis joined the leaders and grabbed the point at Lap 50, but the battle was just heating up. Metdpenningen, Maran, and Dupuis put on a classic side by side run for the top spot. The lead trio swapped the lead back and forth, changing lanes, using lapped cars as picks, going three- and sometimes four-wide in traffic and never gaining a distinct advantage on each other. Dupuis would pull away by some 10 car lengths, only to have Maran erase his lead in a few short laps. Bennett made it a four-car train early on until he went a lap down. The same happened to Metdpenningen, who lost contact with the lead duo in the final 75 laps. With Dupuis out front and Maran shadowing the leader, Dupuis's car started dumping water with just 15 laps to go as the field slid through Turns 1 and 2 until it dried. This slowed Dupuis, and Maran zipped by on the way to his $1000 win and the trophy. hofmanvlfr070310.jpgDupuis nursed his machine home to second spot and Metdpenningen was third, both one lap down. Bennett took fourth, and fifth was Robb Remick, followed by Derrick Sheppard, Tom Sprotberry, Tom LaFollette, Bobby Hugo, and Ortega. The entire field did a great job with very few incidents despite the three- and four-wide racing that went on the entire 250 laps.

The MCR Dwarf cars visited Flat Rock Saturday and Eric Hoffman scored his first win of the season in the 25-lap main event. Jon Wiley took the lead at the start and was strong out front. Hoffman and Junior Gould stayed with the leader as they approached lapped traffic on Lap 15. Wiley chose the high lane and Hoffman dove low and snared the first spot. Gould would spin his machine into the infield with five laps to go, ending his chances for a win. Hoffman took the checkered flag ahead of Wiley, Craig Curtis, Mike McManman Jr., Mike McManman Sr., Stephen Bobek, Todd Getz, Dave Wylie, Jim Miller, and Joe McManman. Rob Roney set fast time for the 22-car field at 12.558 seconds, but dropped out of the feature due to a fuel leak. Hoffman, Curtis, and Mike Hicks took the heat wins.

pricevlfr070310.jpgCurrent point leader David Price took it three-wide on the first lap, stood on the gas, and made the move stick to propel him to the win in the 20-lap ARCA 4-Cylinder feature. Price zoomed to the high side on the green and got by front row starters David Katafiaz and Spicy Chili to take the lead and keep it for the entire distance. Mike Bershback and Brad Turner closed in on Price but settled for second and third, respectively.  Katafiaz, Chili, and Thomas Elmore were next in line at the stripe. Turner set quick time at 15:035, with Price also taking the heat win.

Bill Carberry kept his boat on the trailer and took the victory in the Boat Figure 8 race over Spicy Chili, Ben Estep, Don Cox, and Jack Franzil. Franzil lost his boat in the intersection on the first lap. Cox was the early leader but lost a tire on the trailer. Cox continued on until the trailer and boat came unhooked and ended his night. Carberry got by Cox a lap earlier on the way to the win. Cox won the Race Car Bowling contest with a strike on his final attempt, knocking down all 10 barrels.
