Flat Rock Weather and Action Hot for School Bus Night

(FLAT ROCK, Mich. - June 12, 2010) - An extremely warm and muggy evening greeted a large crowd that ventured to Flat Rock Speedway Saturday for the Marco's Pizza School Bus Figure 8 race.  Billy Earley took the bus event, while Greg Studt grabbed the 50 lap ARCA Figure 8 feature.  Cory McCaughey led the pack in the ARCA Factory Stock contest, while Mike Bershback claimed top honors in the ARCA 4 Cylinder main.

The 8 school buses slammed and crashed their way around the Figure 8 track, with tech inspector Gary Majchzak getting on his side, courtesy of chief tech man Jack Franzil.  Jack chased Gary through turns 1 and 2 of the oval, dipped into the grass and sent Gary on his side as the crowd roared.  In the end, only 2 buses were still running with Billy Earley taking the flag.  Kevin Rapley was the only other bus able to move at the end.  Ray Gaddis, Danny Gaddis, Dennis Whisman and Jeff Kurzyniec were the other bus pilots.  Bus sponsors were Global Pawn of Monroe, George's Used Cars of Flat Rock, Suburban Oil of Taylor, Grillers Select BBQ Sauce, Sterling Printing and Graphics, Sportway of Westland, Brownstown and Toledo and the Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club.

A wild, action-packed ARCA Figure 8 50 lap event saw Greg Studt grab his first-ever win in a 50 lap event at "The Rock".  studtwinfr10.jpgThe 2-time champ of the division picked up the lead on lap 17 when race leader Billy Earley had an engine let go, coating the track in oil.  A flurry of red flags slowed the race, including the start when Anthony Terris put down heavy oil on the green flag.  A big crash slowed things again when Jeremy Fragassi stalled at the intersection.  Dennis Whisman tried to avoid Jeremy, but slammed into him, sending the rear end of Fragassi's car in the air.  Both drivers were ok but done for the night.  Jerry Lee led the first lap, Earley took control on lap 2 with Studt in pursuit.  Greg appeared to be the fastest car on the track as he moved up from his sixth starting spot and took the lead after Earley's misfortune.  He stayed in control to score the victory over Jeremy Vanderhoof, Gary Cronenwett, Robbie Loving, Lee, Tim Murphy, Sam Hall, Chuck Pankow, James Rae and Stephanie Bradley.  Heat race winners were Earley and Terris.

Rick Bennett led the first 7 laps until Cory McCaughey shot by on his way to the win in the 20 lap ARCA Factory Stock feature race.  A fast-closing James Hazlett took second spot, third was Bennett, fourth was Eric Huston and fifth was Jeff Metdpenningen, followed by Landon Schuster, TJ Miller, Danny Bennett, Brian Ringger and Randy Padgett.  Hazlett had quick time at 14:002, with heat wins to Huston and Ringger.

A great 4-car battle ensued in the 20 lap ARCA 4 Cylinder race as Mike Bershback withstood the pressure from his brother Shawn to take the victory.  David Price and Brad Turner pushed the lead duo as they diced back and forth for the final 10 laps of the all-green flag event.  They finished in that order, with Mike Marlow, Perry Marlow, David Katafiaz, Thomas Elmore and Doug Beasley next in line at the stripe.  Turner set fast time at 15:174, while Mike Bershback also took the heat win.

Big Red Crème Soda and Lakeshore Utility Trailer Sales will sponsor the Saturday, June 19 race card at Flat Rock Speedway.  The ARCA Figure 8's, DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks and the second Figure 8 Train race of the season will provide the entertainment.  The pits open at 3, practice begins at 4, time trials are at 5:30 and racing begins at 7 p.m.
