Toledo Opens Under Perfect Weather

TOLEDO, OH  (4-30-10)--  Toledo Speedway's Valvoline Summer Racing Series presented by Cumulus Radio got underway Friday evening under sunny skies and warm temperatures.  The PNC Bank Friday night opener winners were Ron Allen, Dennis Whisman, Cory McCaughey and Brad Turner.  The track also held its annual Armed Forces Appreciation Night, with all military personnel admitted as guests of the speedway.

5-time ARCA Sportsman champ Ron Allen captured the 35 lap ARCA Sportsman feature race, taking the lead late in the event.  Early leader Tom Adams Jr. held Allen at bay for much of the race and through numerous yellow flags.  On a lap 23 re-start, Allen darted low in turn 2 and zipped into the lead, with Jim Froling also getting by Adams Jr. for second.  Ron held on as Froling applied the pressure to the checkered flag.  whismanvltoledo043010.jpgFroling was second, Adams Jr. third, Todd Hamilton fourth and Canadian rookie Kyle DeLisle fifth, followed by first-time Toledo visitor Shawn Dupie, David Frantz, Chad Stilwell, Rich Abel and Kenny McKay Jr.  Froling set fast time for the 20 car field at 17:390.  Heat race winners were Allen, Dupie and Scott Lockenhour.

Dennis "The Rebel" Whisman zoomed to victory in the 20 lap ARCA Figure 8 feature, taking the lead from Randy Roberts on lap 9.  Dennis sailed through the intersection traffic to grab the win.  Anthony Terris came home second, getting by Roberts in the closing laps.  Roberts came home with his career-best third place, fourth was Sam Hall and fifth went to Chuck Pankow.  Stephanie Bradley, Tom O'Leary Jr., Nick Bradley, Allen Bland Sr. and Jeremy Fragassi completed the top 10.  Whisman and Pankow notched heat race wins.

The 20 lap ARCA Factory Stock feature started out with a bang as Rick Cousino Jr. slammed into the turn 3 wall on the start of the event.  He was checked out and was ok.  Second-year driver TJ Miller drove a great race as he led the 21 car pack for 18 laps.  mccaugheyvltoledo043010.jpgHowever, his teammate, Cory McCaughey, was a man on a mission.  McCaughey grabbed the lead with 2 laps to go to take the big win.  Miller's effort gave him his best-ever finish with a second place run, third went to Tim Shine, followed by Landon Schuster, James Hazlett, Eric Huston, Ryan Beabout, Todd Perkins, Ramon Ortiz and Don Cox.  Fast time honors went to Schuster with a lap of 11:920.  McCaughey, Huston and and Ortiz were the heat race winners.

Defending champ Brad Turner took the lead late in the race when leader David Price encountered a flat tire, paving the way for Brad's win in the 20 lap ARCA 4 Cylinder feature race to close out the evening.  Perry Marlow, Michael Marlow, David Katafiacz, Nick Walentowski, David Price and Tyler Ensign were next in line at the finish.  Turner set fast time at 12:794 and also captured the heat race win.turnervltoledo043010.jpg
