Theodore "Uncle Pete" Peters Passes
He received the nickname "Uncle Pete" because when his niece Darlene Stilwell- Denny, the tireman's wife-would introduce him to people, she always said "and this is Uncle Pete." The name stuck. Uncle Pete is best remembered as making the best hamburgers at the Speedways, working with Amanda (Oikle) Herbster, Nancy, and the Franzil girls in 2002 and 2003 firing up the grill every Friday and Saturday. He would add his own special ingredients (salt & pepper combined in one shaker, at a ratio only he knew). Customers would stand in line by the grill waiting for one. He loved being around everyone. There was nothing he enjoyed better than making people happy.
Uncle Pete especially enjoyed watching the races at Flat Rock. He would have his own special, high rise, chair sitting at turn one. He would cheer on all the racers, but he had his favorite - Steve Cronenwett. A fond memory of his was during a bus race when one of them came charging at the gate. Everyone went running for safety (including his daughter-Debbie, who was the gas girl). There he sat, unable to get down without help. But what a thrill he had. He would always laugh and tease everyone about it.
Theodore was born on May 27, 1924. He would have been 86 years old. He leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Lois and their two daughters - Judy Rice and Debbie Mock.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
